Bodybuilding and performance enhancing supplements became extremely popular when creatine was rediscovered in the early 1990's. Soon after, we were flooded with advertisements for many other individual supplements. These days supplement companies have put much effort into scientific research on not only how muscles react to supplements, but also how supplements react when combined. This has led to an influx of formulas containing numerous ingredients combined rather than mere individual supplements.
Have you ever looked at the label of one of these formulated products only to see a long list of 20 or so ingredients? Many won't even bother reading the contents; they simply see that list (most of which they can't even pronounce) and believe with all of those ingredients, this must work. The problem is that the amount of each ingredient is often not listed, but rather it's put under 'Propriety Blend.' Though you may know how many grams or milligrams you're getting of the propriety blend, there's no way of knowing how much of each individual ingredient you're getting.
Protein Blend
It's been revealed that some companies will also use fillers in their blends as a marketing tactic because in this realm people believe more is better. Fillers are cheap additions to supplements, and unfortunately that may be the bulk of what you're getting in a propriety blend.
For example, a fat burner may list a propriety blend of 300 milligrams which contains caffeine along with 10 other ingredients. It's quite possible you may be getting 250 milligrams of caffeine leaving only 50 milligrams to be split among the other 10 ingredients, which isn't much. In this case, you may be better off simply buying a bottle of caffeine pills and save your money as the fat burner will be to more expensive than straight caffeine.
I won't make the statement that every product that contains a propriety blend without listing the amount of each individual ingredient is worthless, but as with most advertisements, they're probably hyped up to be more effective than what they really are. Supplements like glutamine will indeed help you build muscle. But if the blend has only one gram of glutamine, you probably won't see any actual results that glutamine produces.
There are three things you can do that will help prevent you from getting scammed by propriety blends.
1) First, research each ingredient listed on the label. You should want to know what you're putting into your body.
2) It's a good idea to write the supplement company about their product and ask them if they're willing to send you the amounts of each ingredient, not just the propriety blend. You may even get some free samples by doing so.
3) Read unbiased forums and reviews on the product you're considering taking.

Black Friday Nitrean Whey, Casein, and Egg Protein Blend, 2.2lbs, Vanilla Overview
Nitrean is one of the premier protein products on the market today. It is superior to any whey-only powder with its blend of whey (isolates, concentrate, and hydrolyzed), casein, and egg proteins. In addition, it is one of the best mixing and tasting products available.
Why is Nitrean's protein blend superior to a whey-only product?
The idea of the post-workout nutritional window is valid but somewhat misunderstood when it comes to protein supplementation. The common wisdom is that whey is best for post-workout situations due to its quick absorption rate and its concurrent spiking of protein synthesis.
In reality, increased protein synthesis occurs as a direct result of the training stimulus for up to 48 hours after an intense session.
Thus, the claimed strength of whey can actually become a hindrance. Its rapid absorption gets amino acids into your bloodstream quickly, but nearly as quickly that spike in amino acids dissipates and the body is left bereft of the amino acids it yearns for.
What your body needs after training and at ALL times is a prolonged and relatively constant flow of amino acids into the bloodstream. This can best be accomplished by ingesting a blend of different protein types and that is exactly what Nitrean provides.
Bottom line, Nitrean provides one of the best net retentions of ingested protein (your body retains more of it) of any product on the market today. You can take that fact to the bank and the gym!
I usually hate the taste of protein products! How does Nitrean taste?
We know that you aren't going to use a protein supplement for long if you don't like the taste. Nitrean was formulated with that idea in mind and the vast majority of its users don't just like the taste, they love it! Nitrean users often write to us that it is quite simply the best tasting protein product they have ever tried!
